There are no restrictions for the importation of currency
in the TRNC.
The local currency is the Turkish Lire, which was re-valued
on the 1st January 2005. The change took the form of removing
six zeros from the currency so that 1,000,000TL became 1 YTL.
Both old and new notes will remain in circulation until the
end of 2005.
British currency and Cyprus pounds (the currency of the
southern part of Cyprus) are accepted in most outlets, but it
is recommended that currency and travellers and euro cheques
are changed at the exchange offices in town, where competitive
rates are offered. These outlets are open on more days of the
week, and for longer hours than banks, and in general will
offer a quicker turn around than banks, where long queues are
not unusual.
International credit cards are accepted by all major hotel
and businesses, and local currency can also be obtained by
using debit and credit cards at ATM's provided by the high
street banks. |
